Prodigy
Gamified goal completion system for student success
Overview
Prodigy’s Teacher app is a tool used in schools to keep student engaged through a game based learning. There was a steady decline observed in the number of Teachers returning to the app and students actively playing the game.
Goal
Improve Teacher and student engagement on the Platform with a new core loop
Impact
• Teacher engaement increased from 32% to 45% • 5% increase in Teachers creating assessments for their students
What I did in my role
• Collaborated with UXR to closely understand Teacher's motivations in class, the real world environment. • Reviewed and evaluated analytics to understand a Teacher's daily behaviour on the Dashboard. • I led Multiple workshops with stakeholders to think through ideas for a reward mechanism within the Teacher and the game platform. • Released a feature experiment to gauge Teacher's interest in the feature and evaluate the overall performance which was then released as the new core feature on the app.
Why is this important?
To increase engagement and retention of both Teachers and students, we need to enable teachers to take an action and inturn students completing the task for a reward. Through generative research, we learnt that a goal-reward system was one of the most common strategies used by Teachers in school and we want to create a similar system with Prodigy's offerings.
Business and UX outcomes
I leveraged the hook model to create a system between the Teachers and the students. In order to ensure that Teachers are able to access the feature right upfront, the reward feature was designed to be on the dashboard from where a Teacher can review the peformance of the entire class. I also worked closely with Teachers to understand their setup in school and how this system would work in their day to day working.
Design Direction
The first version of the feature was released after an experiment. Version 1 was based on the "Questions answered this week widget" enabling teachers to only released the reward after the goal was achieved by the students.
