Prodigy

Memorable account for continuous student learning

Overview

On the Identity team at Prodigy, the memorable account feature was aimed to make usernames more memorable for students. Currently, devices are used by multiple students in schools. This caused students not being able to recognize their accounts leading to duplicate accounts. We designed a sign up and login experience for students to ease remembering their accounts and continue their progress in learning.

Goal

Enable students to create identifiable accounts for themselves and return to the same account avoiding duplicate accounts and loss in their learning progress

Impact

Feature was experimented and released as the new signup and login experience for Prodigy

What I did in my role

Led the Identity team at Prodigy to envision and redesign the signup and login experience for the game through memorable avatar usernames. • Made the signup and return login experience more visual by enabling students to also select an avatar which was typically a game pet during the sign up experience. • The UX Copy on the Sign up and Login experience was also further refined to be more personalized to be more welcoming and assuring students of their identity. • 6 Different game characters from both the Math and English game were picked for familiarity as Phase 1. This was also to account for 2 different types of games on the platform and also provide more flexibility in options.

Why is this important?

Enabling students to continue on their educational learning without disruption will lead to higher engagement and retention on the platform and thereby better educational outcomes for students. It was important to create a vision of the experience with two Core Subjects and present it to Leadership. Additonally I created and experiment track with a series of experiments with my PM.

Business and UX outcomes

Following the precursor experiment, we looked at the entire user flow and enhanced the experience through a visual avatar selection screen. Hypothesis: By enabling students to pick an avatar for their username, students are more likely to remember their username through forming a visual connection and successfully be able to recognize and log back in into the game when they return.

Design Direction

I designed a grid of 6 game characters which would be easier for students to pick from. (Its easier for humans to remember 7 elements at once) 6 game characters or more specifically pets were chosen for phase 1. As kids choose pets in the game and personalized them, this was seen as an opportunity to tap on a closely formed bond of students with pets as a way to associate their accounts within the game.

Feature Impact

After experimentation, this feature was released as the main control experience for students.
